Thanks to Riikka for the picture

Living Room

The living room has a TiVo connected to our main TV set. The TiVo is a standalone series one unit (the only ones that TiVo have made available in the UK). The series one TiVo does not have any network capability, but you can buy a 3rd party network card for it called a TurboNet card. I've fitted one of those and so the TiVo is connected to the network LAN running through our house.

The TiVo is responsible for recording the TV shows and they are stored on (an upgraded) hard disk in the TiVo. When I want to watch the shows around the house I'm just going to stream them directly from the TiVo's storage.

Bedroom

The bedroom is where I intend to put this new Pundit device, connected to a smaller TV. The Pundit will just run MythTV as a frontend in order to view the shows stored on the TiVo downstairs. I'll also want to use the Pundit to do other things such as play music files, but again these wont be stored on the Pundit itself, instead they will be stored on a file server in the computer room. The Pundit wont be switched on all the time, we'll just turn it on when there is something that we want to use it for and we wont use the Pundit for watching live TV either as we'll just use the TV itself for that.

Computer Room

A file server sitting in another room in our house will be used to store music files, images and anything else. I may use that machine to host the MySQL database too. The file server stays on 24 hours a day so it should always be accessible, and having the MySQL database on that machine will make backups easier.
